Broderie Perse is French for "Persian Embroidery". It is a technique where elements, such as flowers or birds, are cut from fabric and appliqued onto a solid piece of fabric to make a scene or central design. It was most popular in Europe in the 17th century, and probably travelled from India, as there are some earlier findings there. Historically, Broderie Perse used Chintz fabrics. In the early 1900's Chintz fabric was very expensive. To better use the Chintz, the elements were cut from the Chintz and arranged on another piece of fabric as a central design or for borders and appliqued in place. Quilters now have many options for floral, bird and tree designs app on cotton fabric.
